It’s important to relax and whatever your sporting interests may be, indoor and outdoor, Carrickfergus has ample facilities to keep you active. And wherever you go, you’ll be bowled over by the beautiful scenery and spectacular coastline of this part of Co. Antrim.
Fancy a spot of angling? Well, there’s seven reservoirs packed full of brown and rainbow trout to choose from. Maybe a round of golf is more your thing – try the four challenging courses within the Borough, more than enough to test the most avid golfer’s skills.
For good exercise, it’s hard to beat the simple pleasure of a brisk walk and the Borough's exquisite gardens and parks offer tranquil refuges, far from the madding crowd.
Read on and chose what you want to do, at your leisure.

A FITTER FUTURE FOR ALL
A multimillion pound refurbishment programme is planned for Carrickfergus Leisure Centre, reflecting Carrickfergus Borough Council’s commitment for improving quality of life for all its citizens and providing the best state of the art facilities.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
As part of the continuous regeneration of the town, the Borough Council is committed to developing a top class leisure service. This is to provide enhanced opportunities for our many elite performers and also to serve grass roots participants at all levels. Personal wellbeing is a topical and important issue nowadays and your new leisure complex will represent the best in modern health, fitness and relaxation provision.
Carrickfergus Borough Council believes you deserve the absolute best, the most up-to-date, state of the art facilities in your Leisure Centre. The key criteria in our specification brief to our architects and professional team was that the new centre be world class, top quality, a modern design fit for the next generation and with access for all.
WHY ARE WE DOING IT?
The Leisure Centre has served ratepayers in the Borough for almost three decades. The Centre is now showing signs of age, some of which you may have noticed. Whilst the Centre has had no major down time over its life, use over such a prolonged period means that all the various building systems necessary to run the centre are in need of replacement. In addition the Centre was built at a time when less consideration was given to matters such as energy efficiency and access. In short, it no longer reflects the standard which is expected in today’s world.
Once complete, the Carrickfergus leisure offering will be in line with other quality facilities in the Borough including the multi award winning Marina and Maritime Area, Museum and Civic Centre and the recently refurbished Town Hall complex. The Council considers this development will help achieve its published core purpose:-
“To experience the joy of innovation, provide an environment for people to flourish and develop Carrickfergus for the benefit of all”.
THE INTERIM PERIOD
The Leisure Centre activities will continue until the new complex is opened at other Council venues.
For further information on clubs (Gymnastics, Trampoline etc) contact 02893 358000. The health and fitness facility will be relocated to the Millennium Oakfield Community Development Centre in July 2007. At this location we will be able to recreate the gym within pleasant surroundings with ample parking.
