Amphitheatre Wins William Keown Trust Award

Carrickfergus Borough Council has again triumphed in The William Keown Trust Awards. Having won the award for the Civic Centre building, the Council has again scooped the accolade for Amphitheatre.
Carrickfergus Borough Council has again triumphed in The William Keown Trust Awards. Having won the award for the Civic Centre building, the Council has again scooped the accolade for Amphitheatre.
The William Keown Trust is an organisation which aims to champion the rights of people with disabilities. The Trust was formed by Bill Keown some 25 years ago. The Trust is committed to the removal of physical barriers which may limit people with disabilities participating in the life of their community.
Each year the Trust makes awards which include Children of Courage Award, Carers Award, Special Olympic Awards, the Special Christopher McCollum Memorial Cup and the Haldane Butler Memorial Trophy. In addition, the Trust grants awards to buildings which, in its view, should be commended for the steps taken to minimise the barriers to access experienced by people with disabilities.
In bestowing the award to Council , the William Keown Trust commended Amphitheatre and specifically recognised the access route from the car park, the bright reception area with suitable colour contrast and low reception desk.
In addition the Trust noted the high standard of the changing accommodation provided and gave recognition to the fact that this had been achieved within the limitations imposed by the existing building layout. Design work on Amphitheatre was carried out by WM Given of Coleraine, the main contractor was Gilbert Ash.
