Titanic Honour and Glory Exhibition to Drop Anchor in Carrickfergus

31 January 2012

2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the famous passenger ship the ‘Titanic’.

To mark this significant and poignant centenary a national touring exhibition Titanic Honour and Glory, is set to open to the public at Carrickfergus Museum & Civic Centre on Friday 17 February 2012. This travelling show was voted by The Times newspaper as one of the top 5 exhibitions in the country in 2008 and has been seen by over a million visitors across the UK.

Titanic Honour & Glory is an exciting, awe inspiring and evocative travelling exhibition. It features many rare and previously unseen artefacts from the liner’s passengers and crew.  These include some beautiful china dinner plates, which served the first meals aboard the Titanic.

Director of Titanic Honour and Glory, Sean Szmalc has been fascinated with the Titanic from the age of 5 when he saw the film ‘A Night to Remember’.  Says Sean, “This diverse exhibition appeals to so many people from all age groups.   With the exhibition we aim to increase knowledge of Titanic’s history, that of her sister ships and the White Star Line, which owned and operated many of what were the finest liners that had ever sailed the oceans of the world.  Each individual visitor to the exhibition will get a feeling of what it was like to have been on Titanic.  The exhibition will take you on a voyage of discovery.”

Also on show, will be a letter, which was written on board Titanic.  And, perhaps most poignantly of all, a lifeboat nameplate, from one of the Titanic’s lifeboats.  Visitors will also be able to see rare examples of in memoriam tributes following the aftermath of the sinking including Titanic relief fund cheques which were given to support the families of those who were lost.

Mayor of Carrickfergus, Jim McClurg said, “We are delighted to be hosting this exciting exhibition to mark the historic centenary of the tragedy of Titanic. Carrickfergus is a town with a very rich maritime heritage of sea farers and ship builders so it is only fitting that we help to mark such an important date in history.”

Jayne Clarke, Curator, Mid-Antrim Museums Service comments, "Mid-Antrim Museums Service Partnership are delighted to present Titanic Honour and Glory as a tribute to the Harland and Wolff workforce who designed and built this magnificent ship and to all those who tragically lost their lives in the worst ever peace-time shipping disaster. Titanic was built in Belfast for the White Star Line in 1911 and it’s fitting that the exhibition come to Carrickfergus as the first venue on it’s tour of Mid-Antrim museums, with the Borough’s strong maritime heritage on the shores of Belfast Lough.’

The exhibition on its Titanic Centenary tour will be on display at Carrickfergus Museum & Civic Centre until 28 April 2012 and will then travel to three other museum sites across mid-Antrim to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the fabled ship. Admission to the exhibition is free.

Mid-Antrim Museums Service Partnership consists of Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey Borough Councils.
