The final of the 2011 Carrickfergus Safe Cycle Challenge took place on Friday 8th of April at Oakfield Community Centre.
The finalists representing all Primary schools in the Borough demonstrated their safe cycling skills in front of an audience of parents, teachers, the Mayor of Carrickfergus Alderman Jim McClurg, Police Officers, the Chair of Carrickfergus Road Safety Committee Councillor Isobel Day, staff from Council's Environmental Services, Department of the Environment and fellow pupils following the completion of a written test based on road safety and the Highway Code.
Winner (of a new bicycle) - Kaitlin Crawley from Acorn Integrated Primary School
Runner Up (winning cycle lock and lights) - Mathew Ellis from Model Primary School
Third (winning cycle lights) - Cameron Date from Woodlawn Primary School
All finalists received a certificate, each already having won a cycle helmet during the school heats.
Inspector Tommy Mahood of Carrickfergus PSNI commented
"The Carrickfergus Safe Cycle Challenge is designed to raise awareness of road safety in cycling in a fun way. However road safety is a serious matter and hopefully those P7 pupils who took part will become safer cyclists on the roads in the Carrickfergus area. Carrickfergus Police would like to take this opportunity to re-enforce cycle security by reminding children not to leave their bicycles lying unattended in gardens and parks etc, and to use an approved bicycle lock. Bicycles should always be put away at night in a locked shed, garage or other area."
Presenting the prizes, the Mayor of Carrickfergus, Alderman Jim McClurg said
"The Carrickfergus Safe Cycle Challenge has been helping promote children’s safety on their bikes for 11 years now so that works out at around 5,000 11 year olds since it began. I hope it continues for many years to come. I hope that all the children take what they have learned about cycle and road safety and put it to good use, especially now the lighter evenings are here and the school holidays are coming up.""
The Final was independently judged by Mrs Emma Caul of Newtownabbey Road Safety Committee and this year's winner, Kaitlin Crawley, presented Mrs Caul with a bouquet on behalf of the organisers to thank her for all her help.
