Council hosts film for Holocaust Memorial Day
24 January 2011
Carrickfergus Borough Council will host a Holocaust Memorial Day film ‘Life is Beautiful’ on 28th January 2011 at 7pm at Carrickfergus Borough Council Civic Centre (Antrim Street) for all residents. The event will mark the 66th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and will be attended by the Deputy Mayor of Carrickfergus Cllr Eric Ferguson .
The theme for HMD 2011 is Untold Stories. By listening and telling stories we have not heard before, we can better understand the need to live in a society which values difference and does not tolerate discrimination in any form. These stories can help us to celebrate and value the society we live in today.
Fiona Surgenor, Good Relations Officer explained "Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27th January each year and is a time to remember those whose lives were destroyed or changed beyond recognition through hatred, not exclusively in the Holocaust but also in the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur. Carrickfergus Borough Council’s Good Relations Programme has worked in partnership with the CAN Peace III Programme to bring this film screening to Carrickfergus. It forms part of a series of HMD events taking place across Antrim, Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus. Details of these events are posted on the Council’s website. I hope you can join us on the evening of 28th January to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2011."
Deputy Mayor of Carrickfergus Cllr Eric Ferguson said, "We are looking forward to our local community coming together to remember victims of the Holocaust and those whose lives have been affected by exclusion and hatred. It’s vital that we listen to the stories, consider the lessons and use them to shape our future. I urge people to visit the Holocaust Memorial Day website (www.hmd.org.uk) because by listening to the survivors telling their stories, we can better understand our role in the untold story ahead of us and the need to work together to create a society which is free from discrimination and hatred."
Carly Whyborn, Chief Executive Officer of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust said "Last year, thousands of people across the UK came together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and pledged to become part of the Legacy of Hope. In 2011, people in Carrickfergus Borough have an opportunity to turn this pledge into a reality by seeking out those told and Untold Stories. This action will ensure that we can better understand the past and importantly, use the lessons learnt as an inspiration for our behaviour."
