Welcome to Carrickfergus Borough Council’s new-look website.
With a very long and rich history, Carrickfergus – which includes the settlements of Greenisland and Whitehead - is one of the best known communities in Northern Ireland. and one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. If you are accessing this website from somewhere distant, I do hope that these pages will give you a good understanding of the lively activity which characterises this Borough and perhaps encourage you to pay us a visit in the not too distant future. Local users will find an enormous amount of useful information for a wide variety of interests as they move through the many sections which comprise the site.
I am delighted that Council has entrusted me with the prestigious office of Mayor for another year. The Borough is indeed buzzing on all fronts – we have the Carrickfergus Masterplan taking shape, we are experiencing enormous interest in our refurbished Amphitheatre and we are heavily engaged in planning for the merging of the Province’s 26 Councils in May 2011. These and similar activities mean a very full diary but I must say that no other office or job could deliver the sense of honour and job satisfaction which accompany the role of First Citizen.
The work load in Council can only increase over the coming months as Members work together with their counterparts in Ballymena and Larne Borough Councils in preparation for the merger mentioned above. Whilst this Council may cease to exist as a statutory authority in 2011, I can assure you that I will strive to ensure that full advantage is taken of the intervening months to protect the interests of this Borough and all who live or work here.
For the second consecutive year we have had the great pleasure of welcoming a Royal VIP to the Borough. Prince Andrew has been a frequent visitor to Carrickfergus but we had the pleasure of welcoming him again to Whitehead in mid September.
