Jim Brown has served our community as an elected representative for almost thirty years. During this time  he has held most major positions in the local government arena including five terms as Mayor.

His wide experience has enabled him to play an effective role in dealing with constituency matters and assisting in shaping policy which has lasting influence on others.

Indeed, during his leadership, the Martime Area was developed, bringing retail, entertainment, employment and residential opportunities to our Borough.

This influence is further reflected in the fact that Jim Brown serves on the Board of the Local Enterprise Agency for Carrickfergus, having occupied the position of Vice Chairperson for the past twelve years. He is committed to providing support for job creation and developing potential for those seeking to create new employment opportunities.

There are many local government issues which demand his attention and the provision of affordable social housing holds a high priority for him. Jim has been a member of the Northern Ireland Housing Council for ten years, and represents Carrickfergus Borough Council on that body. He presently chairs the Corporate/Design and Property Services Committee where he seeks to influence the strategic delivery of social housing programmes.

He also holds the position of Chairman of the Board of the Cithrah Foundation, an evangelical Christian body which aims to cater for those who have experienced domestic violence and was delighted to witness the completion and opening of a Refuge which provides a haven for women and women with children who have been faced with this social evil.

His interest in young peoples issues is demonstrated in his membership as a Governor on the Board of Eden Primary School and his previous appointment to the North Eastern Education and Library Board.

He has just completed a second four year term on the local Health body.

Jim also has developed an interest in issues concerning the Travelling Community and Chairs the local Government Partnership on Traveller Issues as well as sitting on the Housing Executive consultation committee on provision for travellers.

Jim Brown has seen many changes during his time in Local Government and is very aware of the need for commitment to serve the electorate. He has demonstrated for over thirty years that principle is more important than party and people come before profit.

He has been married to Esther for the last thirty one years and has two daughters and two granddaughters. This has ensured his continuing interest in young people, their wholesome development and their place in the future of the Borough and beyond.

In his spare time Jim enjoys stamp collecting.
